What grade of stainless steel wire can I use for Jewelry?
I’m looking to buy stainless steel wire (not rope) to be used for making chain mail jewelry. I’ve found some on ebay that is the right size (1mm) but it is grade 304. Will this be okay for constant skin contact or do I need to find the 316 grade they use for food and surgical equipment? Or is there an entirely different grade I should use for jewelry? Thanks much.
If you search for stainless and allergy, you may find some information.
It seems that cheaper jewellery is made with 304, 316 is better but may cost slightly more. Some people will be allergic to all types. You can also look at passivation, a surface treatment of the finished article to reduce the risks.
Look at mig welding wire for supplies of stainless steel.
